The Sacred Na Bodhi Tree
Planted by Prince Sapumal Bandara in 1450 AD
Before embarking on his legendary conquest of the Jaffna Kingdom, Prince Sapumal Bandara (later King Bhuvanekabahu VI) planted this sacred Na tree as an offering to the Buddha. For over 575 years, this living witness has stood in silent testimony to the devotion and courage of one of Sri Lanka's greatest warriors.

The Legend
In the year 1450 AD, as preparations began for the northern campaign, Prince Sapumal came to the Kotte Rajamaha Viharaya to seek blessings. With his own hands, he planted a sapling from the sacred Na tree, making a solemn vow to protect the Dhamma.
The conquest was successful, and upon his return, the prince visited the tree that had grown in his absence. Today, this magnificent tree stands as a symbol of unwavering faith and the eternal connection between royalty and religion in Sri Lankan history.
